Fremont National Forest ![]() The Fremont National Forest is located east of the Cascade Mountains, in the high-elevation lava tablelands of south-central Oregon. The Forest provides the self reliant recreationist the opportunity to discover nature in a rustic environment. There are 1.2 million acres to explore! The Forest contains many high, open places where one can have views extending for miles. There are 600 miles of streams and many lakes, and numerous trails through a wide variety of landscapes. Some of the popular trails are Blue Lake/Palisade Rock, Trail Hager Mountain, Bear Creek, and Cougar Peak. Winter activities - downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing generally run from December through March. Wildlife in the Forest includes deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and pronghorn antelope. Waterfowl such as Canada geese, whistling swans, and mallards are also frequently seen. Small populations of black bear, mountain lion, and bobcat as well as two threatened and endangered species, the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon, are also here.
