Wilderness areas within Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest include Uncompahgre Wilderness; Collegiate Peak Wilderness; Fossil Ridge Wilderness; La Garita Wilderness; Raggeds Wilderness; Mount Sneffels Wilderness; West Elk Wilderness; Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness; Lizard Head Wilderness; Powderhorn Wilderness.

Located in Colorado, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest, with almost 3,000,000 acres, is the third largest National Forest in the contiguous United States, extending into ten Colorado counties. The mostly forested, mountainous lands are located on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies. It is noted for its spectacular scenery and natural features, abundant wildlife and offers a great variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.

• Take the 63-mile Grand Mesa Scenic Byway from Plateau River Canyon, climb through forests and meadows full of wildflowers, to panoramic views from the top of Grand Mesa.
• 4-wheel drive on primitive mining roads in Ouray, known as the Switzerland of America.
• Visit the highest railroad tunnel in North America, at 11,500 ft. The Alpine Tunnel near Pitkin was constructed between 1880 and 1881.
