Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest ![]() Wilderness areas within Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest include Uncompahgre Wilderness; Collegiate Peak Wilderness; Fossil Ridge Wilderness; La Garita Wilderness; Raggeds Wilderness; Mount Sneffels Wilderness; West Elk Wilderness; Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness; Lizard Head Wilderness; Powderhorn Wilderness. Located in Colorado, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest, with almost 3,000,000 acres, is the third largest National Forest in the contiguous United States, extending into ten Colorado counties. The mostly forested, mountainous lands are located on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies. It is noted for its spectacular scenery and natural features, abundant wildlife and offers a great variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.
