Green Mountain National Forest ![]() Located in western Vermont lies the Green Mountain National Forest. Wilderness areas within Green Mountain National Forest include George D. Aiken; Lye Brook; Peru Peak; Big Branch; Breadloaf; and Bristol Cliffs Wilderness. The Vermont hills and mountains, ponds and brooks, are a recreation jewel and a natural resource responding to professional management. With over 350,000 acres, it represents 50% of all public lands in Vermont. The Green Mountain National Forest is a 4 season (some say 6 with mud and Black Fly season) recreation experience. The most popular season is autumn when the mountains are ablaze with color. Summer is popular for camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, and canoeing. Winter brings out colorfully-clad skiers (both downhill and cross-country), snowboarders, snowmobilers, and snowshoe enthusiasts. In Spring, the Forest bursts forth with emerging leaves on the trees, migrating birds, and blooming wildflowers. Mud season is usually short but intense.
