Huron-Manistee National Forest ![]() Located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, lies the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The forests contain approximately 964,413 acres, including 5,786 acres of wetlands. Huron-Manistee National Forests are actually 2 forests combined in 1945 for administration purposes. Nearly a million acres of sandy, rolling hills make up this, the only National Forest in the Lower Peninsula. Spreading across the state from Lake Michigan on the west to Lake Huron on the east, the Manistee and the Huron are "united by rivers." Within a day's drive of Chicago, Detroit, and Grand Rapids, the forest draws thousands of visitors from these metropolitan cities during all four seasons. Hiking, canoeing, mushroom gathering, mountain biking, birding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fall color viewing, hunting, horseback riding, off-road vehicle riding, camping, and other recreation opportunities keep visitors returning. The visibility of the National Forests within the state, good customer service, and a commitment to sound natural resource management are all priorities for the Huron-Manistee National Forest.
