Medicine Bow National Forest




The Medicine Bow/Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grasslands (TBNG) encompasses nearly 3 million acres from the north and eastern borders of Wyoming, south to the I-70 corridor that traverses northcentral Colorado. The forest takes its name from the Native American Indian cerremonies held in the park for curing disease and the mahogany in the forest that was known for making high quality bows.

There are four Wildernesses in the Medicine Bow National Forest, the Savage Run, Platte River, Huston Park, and Encampment River Wildernesses. The topography and climate varies widely with the elevation with arid and humid areas within a hikers reach.



Recommended Activities

  • View some of the most unusual and amazing rock formations, namely the strange rocks of Vedauwoo.
  • Try the Snowy Way Scenic Byway characterized by steep mountain ranges spotted with high elevation lakes.
