Nebraska National Forest

The Soldier Creek Wilderness is within the Nebraska National Forest. The Buffalo Gap Grassland and the Ft. Pierre National Grassland are also within this forest.

The nearly 1.1 million acres administered by the Nebraska National Forest Supervisor are scattered across a large arc extending from central Nebraska west to the northern Panhandle, into southwestern South Dakota, and on east to the state's center. Representing a cross section of the northern Great Plains ecosystems are three National Grasslands, the Buffalo Gap and Fort Pierre (pronounced "peer") in South Dakota, and the Oglala in Nebraska, which along with two National Forests, the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie, in Nebraska make up the Nebraska National Forest.

Recommended Activities

  • Visit Toadstool Park, a national Geologic Site, and one of the most spectacular of Nebraska's Badlands area.
  • Visit Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed. A visit to this modern archeologic excavation in progress helps you to understand why theories on what happened to the bison are so important.
