Bluestone State Park and Wildlife Management Area ![]() Encompassing rugged, heavily forested, mountainous terrain, Bluestone State Park provides a wide variety of water-oriented activities for guests and residents of southern West Virginia. In the midst of this wilderness park, just 5 miles south of Hinton, is Bluestone Lake, the state's 2nd largest body of water. Boating and fishing are an important facet of the recreational program at Bluestone. The further addition of hiking trails, a swimming pool, game courts, and a seasonal nature/recreation program creates a well-rounded array of activities. Hunting and fishing opportunities abound at 17,632-acre Bluestone Wildlife Management Area. The New River divides the area, offering excellent float and bank fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass and channel catfish. Bluestone Lake, 1,970 acres, provides excellent warmwater fishing for catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, panfish and musky. Topography ranges from flat bottomlands to rolling uplands, steep mountains and cliffs. Forests are predominantly oak-hickory. Wildlife includes turkey, mink, muskrat, fox and bobcat.
