Denali State Park

"Denali" is a Tanana Indian dialect word meaning "The High One." Denali is the original name for Mt. McKinley. At 20,320 feet, Mt. McKinley is North America's highest peak, and it literally and figuratively towers over Southcentral Alaska. Denali State Park's 325,240 acres, almost one-half the size of Rhode Island, provide the visitor with a great variety of recreational opportunities, ranging from roadside camping to wilderness exploration. Situated between the Talkeetna Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range to the west, the landscape varies from meandering lowland streams to alpine tundra.

Recommended Activities

  • Birdwatch in the lowland valleys and the alpine tundra areas keeping a lookout for the arctic tern which migrates from the Antarctic every year to breed.
  • Fish for all 5 species of Parcific salmon in one of the many meandering rivers or streams.
  • Hike into the remote backcountry for peace of mind and untouched wild beauty or climb above the timber line for a look at the alpine wildflowers in the summer.
