Denali National Park ![]() Denali National Park and Preserve features North America's highest mountain, the icy 20,320' summit of Mount McKinley. Known as Denali ("the High One") to the Athabaskans, this loftiest of peaks towers over the countless other spectacular mountains and many large glaciers of the 600-mile Alaska Range. Denali National Park's more than 6 million acres encompass a complete subarctic ecosystem, home to grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose. Activities include wildlife viewing, photography, mountaineering, and backpacking.
Established as Mount McKinley National Park on Feb. 26, 1917, the original park was then designated a wilderness area and incorporated into Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980. The park was designated an international biosphere reserve in 1976, and continues to provide a vital Arctic laboratory for research in the natural sciences.
