Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area ![]() This scenic area preserves relatively unspoiled land on both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania sides of the middle Delaware River. The river segment flows through the famous gap in the Appalachian Mountains. The park sponsors a craft village and several environmental education centers. Unique habitats include fens and seeps, waterfalls and plunge pools, river islands, cobble beaches, talus slopes, shale cliffs, rocky cactus barrens, hemlock ravines and rhododendron glades endemic to the New Jersey Highlands and the Pocono Plateau. Wetlands and rich river valley bottomlands which historically have been farmed are now maintained as open space and farmland or are reverting to forest cover.
