Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest ![]() Located south of Nenzel is the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest. It is found in the sandhills prairie among 2,200 acres of Ponderosa pine, Eastern red cedar, jack pine, and Scotch pine that have been successfully planted. A variety of hardwoods and shrubs have also been planted for aesthetic and wildlife values. Nearby is the Merrit Reservoir which is a premier fishing and water sports area. Recreational activities include camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing. The 23-unit Steer Creek Campground was completed in 1972.
