Fort Mountain State Park ![]() Fort Mountain takes its name from an 855-foot-long stone wall at its summit, thought to be erected by ancient Indians either for shelter and protection against other tribes, or for ritual purposes. Fort Mountain Lake offers boating, and fine bass fishing, as well as a beach for swimming. No private boats are allowed but rental boats are available. The park has nature paths and more than eight miles of backcountry hiking trails that are among Georgia's most scenic. Park accommodations include 15 overnight cottages and 70 tent and RV campsites, and there is also a seasonal miniature golf course on site. The park holds an overnight backcountry trip each October; contact the staff for more information. Recommended Activities
