Tombigbee National Forest ![]() Forming a majestic gateway to over one million acres of unspoiled timberland, moss-draped oaks and stately pines frame each path in Mississippi's six National Forests. The Tombigbee Ranger District is one of seven districts within the National Forests in Mississippi. It is comprised of two units, the Ackerman Unit and the Trace Unit. The Forest has a total of approximately 66,600 acres, of which 40,000 are on the Ackerman Unit and the other 26,000 are on the Trace Unit. The Ackerman Unit is located in Winston ,Choctaw and Oktibbeha Counties and lies in a triangle of towns: Ackerman, Starkville, and Louisville. The Trace Unit is located east of Houston, Mississippi, in Chickasaw and Pontotoc counties. It lies along the Natchez Trace Parkway operated by the National Park Service.
