White Mountain National Forest ![]() Larger than the state of Rhode Island, the 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest cover a landscape ranging from hardwood forests to the largest alpine area east of the Rocky Mountains and south of Canada. Located north of New Hampshire's central plateau, the summits and ridges of the White Mountains are the highest in the Northeast. The Presidential Range culminates in the bare granite summit of 6,288' Mount Washington, while Adams, Jefferson, Monroe and Madison also exceed 5,000 feet in elevation.
New Hampshire's portion of the Appalachian Trail runs mainly through the White Mountains, including a section along the Presidential Ridge that is the longest section of the trail above timberline.
