Chena River State Recreation Area

In 1905, Robert Swan discovered the Chena Hot Springs, and the Alaskan government declared the area a park in 1967. Encompassing 254,000 acres of Boreal Forest, the Recreation Area is comprised of willows, birch, alder, aspen, tamarack, and spruce. Rolling hills and valleys are accented by the crystal clear waters of the Chena River. Salmon return to the river annually to spawn and provide a great opportunity to fish and observe other wildlife.

Recommended Activities

  • Take a dip in the Chena Hot Springs and let the hot waters melt away your worries.
  • Canoe, kyak, or raft along the Class 2 Chena River keeping an eye out for beaver dams and spawning salmon.
  • Take a moonlit winter walk and look for the Northern Lights which brighten the dark sky.
  • Hike the Chena Dome Trail through the Antler and Angel Creek drainages where you will have a spectacular view of the striking Angel Rocks.
