Chena River State Recreation Area ![]() In 1905, Robert Swan discovered the Chena Hot Springs, and the Alaskan government declared the area a park in 1967. Encompassing 254,000 acres of Boreal Forest, the Recreation Area is comprised of willows, birch, alder, aspen, tamarack, and spruce. Rolling hills and valleys are accented by the crystal clear waters of the Chena River. Salmon return to the river annually to spawn and provide a great opportunity to fish and observe other wildlife.
