Lying between the Susitna River on the west and the Talkeetna Mountains on the east the slightly rolling topography is ideal for cross-country skiing, dog-mushing, and snowmachining in the winter. The Recreation Area's lake-studded landscape draws avid kaykers and canoers every summer who come to explore the intricate river systems. The recreation area's combination of lakes, wetlands and forests create ideal habitat for many mammals and birds.

• Canoe through the eight-mile chain of tranquil lakes in the Lynx Lake Loop.
• Cross-country ski in the winter months up to Red Shirt Lake to go ice fishing for rainbow trout and then stay overnight in one of the public use cabins.
• Birdwatch along the lakeshores and be sure not to miss the common loon or the arctic tern which flies north from the Antarctic every year to breed.
