Big Branch Wilderness

Big Branch Wilderness is located in the Green Mountain National Forest. Big Branch Wilderness Area is part of the White Rocks National Recreation Area located on the northern half of the Green Mountain National Forest's Manchester District. This area offers unique and diverse recreational opportunities and is rich in cultural history. Both Native Americans and European settlers relied on the natural resources in the area. Until the 1930's, the entire area was used for farming, intensive logging, industry, and settlement.

Hikers enjoy hiking parts of the Appalachian/Long Trail systems, 5 miles of which run through this wilderness. Winter recreation opportunities include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing.

Recommended Activities

  • Hike to Elbow Swamp, a large wetland on the eastern side of Big Branch Wilderness. Don't forget to bring waterproof shoes as this area is usually damp.
  • Cross-country ski in the wilderness and other parts of White Rocks National Recreation Area on the 12-mile Catamount Ski Trail, maintained jointly with the Catamount Trail Association. This trail allows cross-country skiers access to unique parts of the National Recreation Area.
