Breadloaf Wilderness ![]() The 21,480-acre Breadloaf Wilderness is the largest wilderness in Green Mountain National Forest. The area takes its name from the 3,835-foot Bread Loaf Mountain, the highest point in the Wilderness. Breadloaf Wilderness contains Vermont's own Presidential Range with Mounts Wilson, Roosevelt, Cleveland, and Grant. The Breadloaf Wilderness offers wonderful hiking opportunities. Vermont's Long Trail runs its length for more than 17 miles and passes over 11 major peaks all above 3,000 feet in elevation. Breadloaf offers some of the few day-hike loops in the Forest. Leaving designated trails to bushwhack through this mountainous region can also be rewarding. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, Breadloaf Wilderness has much to offer. Even if you are not lucky enough to see black bear and moose in the wild, you can still find signs of their presence. Look for their tracks and watch for trees scratched by bear claws. Breadloaf also contains the headwaters of two find trout streams - the New Haven and White Rivers. This is a unique place all year, but in winter, it is especially lovely and a perfect place to study winter ecology.
