Devils Backbone Wilderness ![]() Devil's Backbone Wilderness covers a 6,800-acre area within the Mark Twain National Forest and is characterized by extremely rugged topography. Its narrow ridges and hollows are separated by long, steep slopes and bluffs. It takes its name from the long narrow ridge known since early settlement as "Devil's Backbone," a high vantage point for looking out over the adjacent valley where visitors will see scattered limestone glades and wild azaleas along the North Fork River. The North Fork Recreation Area is located just outside the north boundary of the Wilderness.
