George D. Aiken Wilderness ![]() George D. Aiken Wilderness is located in the Green Mountain National Forest. This Wilderness sits on a plateau above 2,300 feet in elevation. Although the terrain is not mountainous, you cannot expect easy travel. Wetlands dominate the area - so be prepared to get your feet wet - and there are no designated trails. The few old logging roads leading into Aiken soon fade away. This gives you ample opportunity to use your compass and map-reading skills as you bushwhack through this area. This is one of the most buggy areas in Green Mountain National Forest. Fortunately, mosquitoes and black flies are not the only creatures you may run into while hiking in Aiken. The ponds, meadows, and brushy forest provide water, food, and cover for many wild animals and birds. You are sure to see evidence of beavers and their work. Otters, white-tail deer, moose, and black bear are also among the many animals who live in Aiken. This Wilderness is unlike any of the other 5 on the Green Mountain National Forest. Put on your boots and enter the wet world of the beaver and other forest creatures. The peacefulness and hidden wildlife treasures of George D. Aiken Wilderness are sure to be rewarding.
