Gros Ventre Wilderness ![]() The Gros Ventre Wilderness is located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It lies within the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, a region known for its wild lands, wildlife, geological features, scenic beauty, and recreation opportunities. Part of the network of designated Wilderness which comprises roughly 34% of the Greater Yellowstone region, the Gros Ventre Wilderness contributes significantly to this network. An abundant wildlife habitat, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, coyote, black bears and deer frequent the wilderness. Spectacular geological features include a collage of colorful rocks - bright reds, pinks, purples, grays and brown. Sagebrush and spruce/fir/Douglas fir plant communities, not common in Wilderness in this region, thrive here. The Gros Ventre is the largest roadless area in the lower 48 States. Taking a trip to the wilderness is a rare opportunity to visit an entire intact area - from 11,000 foot peaks down to sagebrush foothills, with all the associated beauty, vegetative diversity and geologic features.
