Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness ![]() The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness falls within 4 National Forests: Bitterroot National Forest, Lolo National Forest, Clearwater National Forest, and Nez Perce National Forest. It is one of the original Wildernesses, created with the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. This Wilderness contains 1.3 million acres and includes rugged subalpine ridges, peaks, and lake-strewn basins, forested lower slopes, and the dry Selway River corridor. Unique features include pockets of dense old-growth cedar forests and a number of sensitive plant and animal species. The Wilderness includes a fire-dependent ecosystem. Brush fields from burns in 1910, 1919, and 1934 can be seen, as well as large recent burns from the late 1980s and '90s. Wildlife is abundant. The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness has an extensive trail system yet it continues to offer outstanding opportunities for solitude for those who travel here.
