Continental Divide National Scenic Trail ![]() The Continental Divide Trail climbs and descends the peaks of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico, traversing mountainside meadows, granite peaks and high-desert saddles. It is the most rugged of the long-distance trails. Through five states, many ecosystems and 12 Congressionally-designated Wilderness Areas-the Continental Divide Trail marks 3,100 miles of America's most dramatic and wild backcountry. The longest officially designated section runs for 795 miles from Canada through Montana and Idaho to Yellowstone National Park. The Continental Divide Trail is a primitive, rugged backcountry trail, travelling through places where human beings are only visitors. Travelers should expect not only thrilling - but challenging - situations. The Continental Divide Trail is open to hikers, pack and saddle animals, and in some places, off-road motorized vehicles. Some segments are open for use in other states.
