Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit ![]() The 29,000 acre Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit interprets the glacial history and geology of Wisconsin. This unit is less heavily used than the Southern Unit. Glacial features include kames, eskers, kettles and interlobate moraine. Recreationists come to swim and boat in the serene lakes, hike and camp. The 2 main recreation areas are Long Lake and Mauthe Lake. The Forest is particularly popular in the winter with crosscountry skiers. The 1,000 mile long Ice Age National Scenic Trail traverses the Forest for 31 miles.
