Bluewater State Park

Bluewater Lake State Park is situated on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains in the Las Tusas Basin. Ringing the lake are rolling hill studded with pinon and juniper trees. Popular for boating and year-round fishing, the lake is stocked with rainbow, native and cutthroat trout (some weighing up to 9 lbs.) and catfish. Ice fishing is popular in the winter months. Numerous good fishing areas are easily reached by car.

The park is host to many of nature's feathered friends. Birdwatching, whether by the expert or novice, is a must at the lake with at least 68 different species of birds calling the park home or a savory resting spot.

The reservoir is located in a shale and limestone valley. If you look closely at the limestone, you may see fossils of snails and brachiopods.

Recommended Activities

  • Look closely at the limestone and shale reservoir walls -- you can see snail and brachiopod fossils in the limestone.
  • Bring your pole, summer or winter, and fish for trout or catfish.
