National Elk Refuge

Late in October and early in November, when snow comes to the high passes, elk begin their traditional migration from high summer range in the Tetons and South Yellowstone to low winter range in the valley.

Recommended Activities

  • Visit during winter and take a horse-drawn sleigh ride to catch a close-up look at the elk herd. Sleigh ride visitor facilities are located at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, two miles north of Jackson on US Highway 26.
