Cherokee National Forest ![]() Tennessee's only National Forest, the Cherokee, covers nearly 630,000 acres in ten East Tennessee counties. The forest is separated into two parts by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. About 10 percent of Cherokee is designated wilderness, and offers solitude and primitive, unconfined recreation experiences. The Forest is healthy and rich with plant and wild animal life, and offers a large variety of outdoor activities. Among the many attractions are the Forest's waterfalls, varying from easy or moderate accessiblity. Wildlife seekers have a unique opportunity to view fish in their natural habitat, for bird-watching including grassy balds, and to visit a black bear sanctuary.
